This collection was recorded in Graz during the November full moon - also referred to as the mourning moon. SAMO, my faithful feline companion, kept me and Tom Zwanzger (AntiFlag, Astpai) company as we reimagined the songs at STRESS Studios. I had written the songs in my room, just me and the cat, so sitting in the studio with an array of instruments and another human’s input put me in a different realm. Over a few days, the melodies manifested into the melancholy spaghetti western soundtrack I had always wanted.

”Hiding from the Smell of Fire” is inspired by a time when I lived in Berlin and there were riots to maintain a claim on a punk squat. Cars were burned nightly and the sirens were constant; I would sit by window and listen and smell the smoke and fire wafting into my Wilmersdorf apartment. “St. Charles‘ Romance” includes a subtle nod to Kafka and was written whilst crossing the Charles Bridge in Prague, a stop along Kafka’s childhood walk to school and a pilgrimage I take whenever in Prague. My fondness for whiskey, minor chords, and a good dose of twang is threaded throughout the melodies. Even SAMO provided a bit of percussion, with her litterbox clawing, as she helpfully shared space with us humans.

Been given like them all: a nickname for the past So I can forget that, forget that Been trying to erase the words, chapters sewn in lace So I can forget that, forget that. I could say that I'm well Well overdue For a night of whiskey and wine to forget about you To forget about you Been tryin to find the tie between forever and good bye But you can forget that, forget that Been standin in the road, not sure which way to go I have forgotten, forgotten I could say that I'm well Well overdue For a night of whiskey and wine to forget about you To forget about you There seems to be this place between forever and the end Where your word softly dwells and my nightmare begins I've tried to reconcile so let me be brief: You loved like an actor And feel like a thief Been turnin all the corners consonant to vowel I can't forget that, forget that Been tryin erase chapters frayed in lace I can't forget that, forget that I could say that I'm well Well overdue For a night of whiskey and wine to forget about you To forget about you

Your callous charm has made me forgive you Time and time again Have you a pill deep in your pocket To ease the taste of you? So I issue a plea That you'll speak with intention Hang up the phone until the notion has passed of cigarettes and carefree love Your throat is dry, parched from the silence poison or purity? Have you a sip in your glass left To ease the taste of you? So I issue a plea That you'll speak with intention Hang up the phone until the notion has passed of cigarettes and carefree love Coffee stains and cowboy boots The freedom of the open road With everywhere and nowhere to go... So I issue a plea That you'll speak with intention Hang up the phone until the notion has passed of cigarettes and carefree love

Hand in hand through narrow lanes And cobblestones handlaid. Find her in the top of Josef's tower. Silence sits between the lips Awaiting a stranger's hiss, will you let her know your secret? Til goodbye? It's a nice day for St. Charles romance It's a nice day to settle down. It's a fine time to stand in line, goodbye's become the thrill. Separate beds breed many thoughts And dreams connect the pins From maps upon four different walls. Wander in the moonlight Let the swans swarm the shore Will you walk her home? For goodbye? Goodbye and goodnight For when I do wake Upon that other shore I must say goodbye to her. It's a nice day for St. Charles romance It's a nice day to settle down. It's a fine time to stand in line, goodbye's become the thrill

bedfellows 02:37
The priest was on time But the devil sets his watch twice as fast He’ll cloak you in satin Blend in with the sheen of the past Lure into forgetting what you have done And sing you to sleep with the wrongs you have won There’s a love story behind everything She lay there beside Her head upon a pillow softly sigh In the morning you will be gone That’s how the script must always unwind But the hellfire of a heart in love Will shake hands with the horned one And sing you to sleep With the wrongs you have won There’s a love story behind everything There’s a love story behind everyone

dirty deeds 03:46
I hadn’t walked sixty steps in the sand Before the vow was forgotten in his hand An end has come Sweat upon a lip, candle lights the room Doorway is empty of a wicked hand The smell it lingers of heat and dirty deeds Pepper on the air silence it seeds This end has come There’s a snake in the grass A chill on the breeze A spider on the branch Reaching for me But this one runs alone, this one runs alone I followed you, covered my tracks Take comfort in the dust and the cracks Your end has come Turn your eyes, I’ve heard it hurts less that way Salt and sin in equal portions on your plate It’s safe in the fire, where the flames lead the way This hell has become your retreat Your end has come There’s a snake in the grass A chill on the breeze A spider on the branch Reaching for me But this one runs alone, this one runs alone Something wicked this way came It called me by name Promised me wealth I turned down it’s fame This end has come

I've said all that I can say And I've heard all that I can take There is nothing left to explain Time will heal the empty notes So pour me another whiskey, my dear Make sure that this one takes Cause I've still got one foot on the floor And I still feel the ache Make me numb, make me numb I just chase what I want to feel Rooted in letters that no one still writes Are your words based in reality If they are please speak with me So pour me another whiskey, my dear Make sure that this one takes Cause I've still got one foot on the floor And I still feel the ache Make me numb, make me numb
7.
I eat from a dead man's plate And I listen for the smell of fire My dear it is much too late To rescind what will transpire Come away from the window Come away Come away from the window Come away I know my share of words But have been taught to believe none They'll shoot til the gun it burns The blood from their hand in turn Come away from the window Come away Pull the bed from the window Come away
